Two Color Granny Square

Two Color Granny Square

(Pictures forthcoming)

This pattern gives the illusion of two triangles. I wrote this as an alternative to the patterns that call for you to turn with each row. I do admit the other version is easier in the fact that there are fewer ends to weave in. But if you want a square that is worked completely on the right side, this one's for you. :)

Materials: Yarn of your choice in two contrasting colors (CA and CB), hook size appropriate to your yarn, yarn or tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

*Please note: I do not turn after each row as many patterns call for. I think doing it this way makes for a much neater appearance, although with the color chages on this particular pattern, doing it this way will result in many more ends to weave in.
**Also please note that while I do not claim to be the original designer of this pattern, I do claim the copyright for my version of the written pattern.

CA=Color A
CB=Color B

Color changing: Maggie's Crochet gives a good tutorial for chaging colors in the middle of a row. For our purposes here, we will be changing in the ch 2 corner spaces. Once you have worked your way to the space where you will chage colors, you drop your current color cutting the yarn and leaving a long tail for weaving in, then you pic up the next color, tie the two ends together to secure, then yarn over with the new color, and continue with the pattern as written.

With CA ch 4

Round 1: 2 dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 2, *3 dc in same st, changing to CB ch 2, (3 dc in same st, ch 2) twice, join with sl st in top of beg ch, fasten off.

Round 2: With CA join with sl st in last ch 2 sp on rnd 1, ch 3, 2 dc in same ch 2 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1) in next ch 2 sp, 3 dc in next ch 2 sp, changing to CB ch 2, 3 dc in same ch 2 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1) in next ch 2 sp, 3 dc in next ch 2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st in top of beg ch 3, fasten off.

Round 3: With CA join with sl st in last ch 2 sp on rnd 2, ch 3, 2 dc in same ch 2 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1) in next ch 2 sp, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 2 sp, changing to CB ch 2, 3 dc in same ch 2 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1) in next ch 2 sp, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st in top of beg ch 3, fasten off.

For larger granny square, continue in established pattern until square is desired size.

Caught Between the Dog & the Fire Hydrant

Oh boy... here we are in our new home state. I wish I could say it was the best thing that ever happened, but the fact is I'm less than impressed. It's been 4 long months and Damian (my son in law) has yet to find a job! At least Maryland is still letting him collect his unemployment! My daughter found a job but only part time. It's been a rocky beginning to say the least.

My savings is quickly dwindling to nothing, but the fact is I really don't think we'd have been any better off in Maryland. Yes, we would have a better income, but but the average rent is at least 4 times there what it is here. Financial issues aside, MO is really not a bad place to live. In the end I know we will be much better off having made the trek halfway across the country. The east coast is becoming so commercialized. The midwest is just a more laid back, relaxed, less pretentious atmosphere. Just a better place to raise a child, IMO. Besides, the scenery is gorgeous and we do see plenty of it as it is at least an hour drive if we want to go anywhere besides Walmart or Sonic!

I plan to resume my education this coming fall once I have received resident status. I just can't afford the out of state tuition costs. In fact, the number 2 reason (Ben of course was my number one reason) for moving out here with the kids was to attend the University of Missouri. I plan to study Library Science and there just wasn't an appropriately located school for me in MD. All the puzzle pieces are here, I just need to work on fitting them into the right places.

Beak:

Using scrap of orange yarn, ch 2, fasten off leaving a 6-9 inch tail for sewing.

Assembly:
1. Sew wings opposite one another onto the body between rounds 3 and 4.

2. Sew the tail onto the back of body centered between the wings and just below round 6.

3. Glue seed beads to the front of the body centered on round 3 for the eyes.

4. Fold beak in half so that the beginning and end of the chain are parallel, and sew into place centered vertically between the eyes and horizontally between rounds 3 and 4. (It may be easier to simply glue this piece into place.)

5. Glue or sew charm into place at end of Row 9 of Body, OR make a small tassel out of left over yarn and secure at end of Row 9 of Body.

Some other things you can do with this:
Do not ch 40 at end of row 9, leave the tail off, and add a magnet to the back for a fridgie.
Leave the wings and tail off and it’s an egg bookmark for Easter.

Missouri or Bust!

Well, it seems that Maryland is no longer the “perfect fit” for our family. My oldest DD and her hubby have decided to trek halfway (literally) across the country—with family in tow—to Mountain Grove, Missouri! Why Mountain Grove? It’s SIL’s hometown. He and DD have been planning to move out there since they got married last year, but it wasn’t supposed to be a reality for a few more years. Some things have recently happened however, that hinted to us that there is no time like the present to take action! And of course I can't let them take my little Ben away from me, so I've decided that DS and I are tagging along!

We will be leaving Maryland at the beginning of July, and plan to be out there by the Fourth so we can party “Missouri Style” in celebration of the country’s B-day. LOL In the mean time, I've been frantically packing up all of my yarn & crafting goodies. So far I have four large boxes of yarn, and still have a lot more to pack. Jeez, I didn’t know I had collected so many yarnie things! The sad thing is, I know the crafting supplies will take up more room in the Uhaul than clothes or furniture. LOL

I typically hate moving, but I'm really looking forward to this one. New scenery, new town, new adventures... I know it will be the best thing for our family, especially Ben. He will get to meet is "other" grandmother and his aunts, uncles, and cousins all for the first time. :) So, with nothing here in MD holding us back, WESTWARD HO!

The latest picture of my favorite little guy :D

Good Enough to Eat

The swapping bug has bitten me! I've signed up for several swaps in some of the craft groups I belong to on Yahoo and have been having a blast. At first I was sticking to the dishcloth swaps. They're quick, easy, fun, & you get something useful in return. (Some of the cloths I've swapped and the patterns can be found on my dishcloth blog: http://dishclothdiaries.blogspot.com/)

Here is my latest swap creation. It's a pin cushion shaped like a donut. (And has zero calories!) I made it from this pattern: http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=32761
I haven't sent it out yet. I just finished it last night so shhhh... don't tell my partner what it is! :) I really hope she likes it!!

But I think the most interesting swap so far has been the "Bra Purse" swap. (Yes I said BRA! LOL) The swap was inspired by the ladies of the Red Hat Society. My daughter Cyndi and I worked on it together, well Cyndi did most of the work, but I think it turned out great and our swap partner thought it was a hoot!
Instead of making a purse that would probably never be used... at least not in public, we decided to make the bra into something a little more useful. I came up with the idea of filling the cups with potpourri to make it into a "closet freshener." So now, I'm told, it is hanging in our partner's bedroom closet. :) So what's next on the swapping agenda? A Potpourri Panty swap to go with the bra purse of course! LOL

UPDATE:

Here's a picture of the Panty Sachet I sent to my partner for the Creative Korner panty swap . I hope she likes it!
