NOTE: I worked this square several different times with different colors and brands of yarn. Each time I worked it I came up with a slightly different size. You may or may not need the last round to acheive a 12 inch square. Also, you may need to use a sc or a dc instead of the hdc to reach 12 inches. Round 10 will work with either a hdc or a dc, if you need to use a sc, then make 3 sc in each corner.

Round 10: sl st in each of next 2 sts, ch 2 (counts as hdc), 4 hdc in same st, hdc in each of next 35 sts, * 5 hdc in next st, hdc in each of next 35 sts, rep from * twice more, join with sl st in top of beg hdc. (160 dc)

Got crochet?

I just love the way colors harmonize to make me feel happy, excited, energized, or even relaxed. Colors truly are nature's anti-depressant. And so is crocheting! Sitting with hook in hand, some soft background music, letting all my cares melt away. I immerse myself into the rhythm of the hook and yarn as they work together allowing my creativity to flow through the stitches as they form.

Are you a free spirit? Do you love to crochet? Do you love fun & funky colors? Do colors effect your mood and emotions? If you answered yes to any of these questions then you will love my new group!

So if you love to crochet with bright colors and chat it up with friends, come join me and we'll crochet the world with color!

Settling in

Things are finally starting to settle here in MO. I'm getting used to the "remote-ness of it all" and am actually enjoying life in the midwest... for the most part anyway. I still miss Maryland sometimes. Especially when I want to "run to the store" or "grab a bite to eat". Mountain Grove's idea of fine dining is Pizza Hut, McDonalds, or Sonic. *sigh* Oh well, good excuse to stay on my diet I suppose... But I could sure go for a REAL Maryland Crab Cake right about now!!

True Love

I just love this commercial. It represents to me what every man should be; A caring father who is unafraid to show his love for his children. There are far too few men like this in the world if you ask me. :(

Hooking Heaven

Hello, my name is April and I'm addicted to yarn! It's been 24 hours since my last yarn purchase and I'm feeling weak! I'm grateful for the 500+ (no joke!) skeins of yarn that are sitting here watching me as I peruse craftsetc.com, acmoore.com, and joann.com in search of my next yarn fix...
  • YES, I'm a yarn whore! I don't care where I get my yarn as long as it's pretty and a good bargain! --Can you say Dollar Tree?!--

I love each and every skein I have bought. From the 50 cent clearance ball of thread in putrid pink, to the fancy schmancy 10 dollar skein from the specialty store, each one holds a special place in my designer's eye. But I can't stop! My 12 rubbermaid bins are full to the brim, as are the underbed storage bags, and the myriad totes and reuseable grocery bags sitting around the house... but what the hell! So what if my living room is overflowing with my yarnie purchases? A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do, right?

So... Someone told me recently, "She who dies with the most yarn wins!" (Maybe she was trying to tell me something?) I insisted that I didn't want to be a part of that game, but from the looks of things here I think I'm currently in first place.

And that's not the half of it!

Faith... or lack thereof

God is like the big blue ocean; all religions and beliefs are like rivers and streams; human-kind is the drop of water. It doesn't matter which path a person takes, as long as they walk in faith and live in truth they will flow back to the big blue ocean.

Religion has always been a struggle for me. Ever since my mother pulled me by the ear to Sunday school, I never understood the mish-mash of information being thrown at me. None of it made any logical sense to me. I think the pivotal moment however, was when my sunday school teacher told me that my dog, Candy, would not be going to "heaven" with me, as dogs have no soul. What gave her the right to make that determination? I mean who made up these rules? What makes them think humans are any better than any of the other living, breathing creatures on this earth. Life is precious no matter the form it takes.

Then there is the issue of other religions. I find it hard to believe that in a world where so many religions exist, (many) Christians still have the audacity to believe thiers is the only true religion. Others are delusional in thier eyes and followers of those "Pagan" religions will go to hell for thinking otherwise. Well how can you go to a place you don't believe exists? I swear it's like belonging to a cult! The arrogance astonishes me.

I once asked my (brainwashed?) ex what he believed as far as religion. His answer started with, "Well, I was always told..."

I responded with, "Yes, I was always told the same things. But I do have a mind of my own and I've come to realize that those things aren't true for me."

His response was the "You will be judged" speech. How can one person be so narrow-minded? So un-accepting of someone else's beliefs?

My cousin was the first to introduce me to an alternative religion. I think one of the things I liked most about it was that you are held accountable for your own actions. It's ridiculous to "hand your problems to God" It's our responsibility to live life the best way we can... not as a puppet.

The Christians do have one thing right. There is only one God. But that's where the truths end. There are many paths to the divine. It's up to each individual to decide for themselves what that path is and how they wish to travel that path.

Just my little rant for the day, thanks for "listening." :)

Calendar 'Ghan CAL

I will be doing a year long Mystery Calendar Afghan Crochet Along.

Each month a different pattern will be posted for a 12 inch square that represents the current month. After the 12th square is completed I will post the pattern for joining and border instructions so you can complete your Calender 'Ghan. All patterns will be new and original designs created specifically for this CAL by me (April.) The patterns will be posted daily, one row at a time, beginning on the first Wednesday of each month and will last approximately one week.
Each month's example square will be worked in a solid color, but you are free to experiment with different color combinations in any way you wish. So when choosing yarn be sure to choose colors and fiber content that work well together. You'll want your Calendar 'Ghan to be both functional and pleasing to the eye. The general idea is that at the end of the year you will have a completed sampler afghan to use for yourself or to give as a gift.

MATERIALS: The materials are the same each month. You will need a US size "I" hook, and approx 3 - 4 ounces Worsted Weight yarn.

FINISHED SIZE: The finished size of each square is 12 inches. The finished size of the afghan will be approximately 40 X 52 inches.

Below is the list of pattern names for each month. The link will show up for each pattern on the first Wednesday of the coordinating month. The link will remain the same for the duration of that month's CAL. The new rows will be added each day until the entire pattern is posted for that month.

January ~ Winter Dream
February ~ Pammi's Passion
March ~ Lion's Mane
April ~ Spring Fling
May ~ Flower Garden
June ~ Summer Romance
July ~ Patriot's Pride
August ~ Heat Wave
September ~ Pineapple Blossom
October ~ Pretty in Pink
November ~ Mum's The Word
December ~ Mistletoe

Two Color Granny Square

Two Color Granny Square

(Pictures forthcoming)

This pattern gives the illusion of two triangles. I wrote this as an alternative to the patterns that call for you to turn with each row. I do admit the other version is easier in the fact that there are fewer ends to weave in. But if you want a square that is worked completely on the right side, this one's for you. :)

Materials: Yarn of your choice in two contrasting colors (CA and CB), hook size appropriate to your yarn, yarn or tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

*Please note: I do not turn after each row as many patterns call for. I think doing it this way makes for a much neater appearance, although with the color chages on this particular pattern, doing it this way will result in many more ends to weave in.
**Also please note that while I do not claim to be the original designer of this pattern, I do claim the copyright for my version of the written pattern.

CA=Color A
CB=Color B

Color changing: Maggie's Crochet gives a good tutorial for chaging colors in the middle of a row. For our purposes here, we will be changing in the ch 2 corner spaces. Once you have worked your way to the space where you will chage colors, you drop your current color cutting the yarn and leaving a long tail for weaving in, then you pic up the next color, tie the two ends together to secure, then yarn over with the new color, and continue with the pattern as written.

With CA ch 4

Round 1: 2 dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 2, *3 dc in same st, changing to CB ch 2, (3 dc in same st, ch 2) twice, join with sl st in top of beg ch, fasten off.

Round 2: With CA join with sl st in last ch 2 sp on rnd 1, ch 3, 2 dc in same ch 2 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1) in next ch 2 sp, 3 dc in next ch 2 sp, changing to CB ch 2, 3 dc in same ch 2 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1) in next ch 2 sp, 3 dc in next ch 2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st in top of beg ch 3, fasten off.

Round 3: With CA join with sl st in last ch 2 sp on rnd 2, ch 3, 2 dc in same ch 2 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1) in next ch 2 sp, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 2 sp, changing to CB ch 2, 3 dc in same ch 2 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1) in next ch 2 sp, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st in top of beg ch 3, fasten off.

For larger granny square, continue in established pattern until square is desired size.

Caught Between the Dog & the Fire Hydrant

Oh boy... here we are in our new home state. I wish I could say it was the best thing that ever happened, but the fact is I'm less than impressed. It's been 4 long months and Damian (my son in law) has yet to find a job! At least Maryland is still letting him collect his unemployment! My daughter found a job but only part time. It's been a rocky beginning to say the least.

My savings is quickly dwindling to nothing, but the fact is I really don't think we'd have been any better off in Maryland. Yes, we would have a better income, but but the average rent is at least 4 times there what it is here. Financial issues aside, MO is really not a bad place to live. In the end I know we will be much better off having made the trek halfway across the country. The east coast is becoming so commercialized. The midwest is just a more laid back, relaxed, less pretentious atmosphere. Just a better place to raise a child, IMO. Besides, the scenery is gorgeous and we do see plenty of it as it is at least an hour drive if we want to go anywhere besides Walmart or Sonic!

I plan to resume my education this coming fall once I have received resident status. I just can't afford the out of state tuition costs. In fact, the number 2 reason (Ben of course was my number one reason) for moving out here with the kids was to attend the University of Missouri. I plan to study Library Science and there just wasn't an appropriately located school for me in MD. All the puzzle pieces are here, I just need to work on fitting them into the right places.

Finished size: Approx 10 inches

Materials:
(US) size F hook; small amount worsted weight yarn, small scrap orange worsted weight yarn for beak (6 strand embroidery floss may be substituted); tapestry needle; small amount fiberfill stuffing; 2 black seed beads; glue, small charm (optional).

**Do not join rounds unless otherwise instructed.

Body

ch 2

Round 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.

Round 2: 2 sc in ea st around.

Rounds 3-7: sc in ea st around.

Round 8: sc2tog around, stuff lightly with fiberfill.

Round 9: sc2tog around, ch 40, fasten off.

Wings & Tail (make 3):

ch 2

4 sc in 2nd ch from hook, fasten off leaving a 6-9 inch tail for sewing.

Beak:

Using scrap of orange yarn, ch 2, fasten off leaving a 6-9 inch tail for sewing.

Assembly:
1. Sew wings opposite one another onto the body between rounds 3 and 4.

2. Sew the tail onto the back of body centered between the wings and just below round 6.

3. Glue seed beads to the front of the body centered on round 3 for the eyes.

4. Fold beak in half so that the beginning and end of the chain are parallel, and sew into place centered vertically between the eyes and horizontally between rounds 3 and 4. (It may be easier to simply glue this piece into place.)

5. Glue or sew charm into place at end of Row 9 of Body, OR make a small tassel out of left over yarn and secure at end of Row 9 of Body.

Some other things you can do with this:
Do not ch 40 at end of row 9, leave the tail off, and add a magnet to the back for a fridgie.
Leave the wings and tail off and it’s an egg bookmark for Easter.

Missouri or Bust!

Well, it seems that Maryland is no longer the “perfect fit” for our family. My oldest DD and her hubby have decided to trek halfway (literally) across the country—with family in tow—to Mountain Grove, Missouri! Why Mountain Grove? It’s SIL’s hometown. He and DD have been planning to move out there since they got married last year, but it wasn’t supposed to be a reality for a few more years. Some things have recently happened however, that hinted to us that there is no time like the present to take action! And of course I can't let them take my little Ben away from me, so I've decided that DS and I are tagging along!

We will be leaving Maryland at the beginning of July, and plan to be out there by the Fourth so we can party “Missouri Style” in celebration of the country’s B-day. LOL In the mean time, I've been frantically packing up all of my yarn & crafting goodies. So far I have four large boxes of yarn, and still have a lot more to pack. Jeez, I didn’t know I had collected so many yarnie things! The sad thing is, I know the crafting supplies will take up more room in the Uhaul than clothes or furniture. LOL

I typically hate moving, but I'm really looking forward to this one. New scenery, new town, new adventures... I know it will be the best thing for our family, especially Ben. He will get to meet is "other" grandmother and his aunts, uncles, and cousins all for the first time. :) So, with nothing here in MD holding us back, WESTWARD HO!

The latest picture of my favorite little guy :D
